Wish me luck!
Surprising how quickly time goes, especially when you're having fun. Over Easter, my Mom came to visit, and we had a great time. Two weeks was just not enough! The highlight of the holiday was our trip to Brighton, which was great, if a little short. We were blessed with stunning, summer-like weather, and for the first time in 4 years I have managed to get a reasonable ammount of tan from the weak British sunshine! It did take the better part of 3 days wandering around outside to do it, but hey, it's there!
Today I went to a selection day and sat a load of tests to see if I am suitable to be an air traffic controller. Surprisingly, I felt OK about most of the tests, and even managed to finish the one where you have to visualise cubes covered in random patterns, and rotated around from a flat plan. Some of them I did guess, but a surprising number seemed obvious. I have never really felt comfortable with that sort of 3D stuff before, so I wonder if I got them all wrong! The only questions I really struggled with were the maths questions, and had to dredge out stuff I haven't used since school. I think I managed to work them out, but a few I simply didn't know, like how to convert knots into miles per hour... Anyway, at least that's over now, I can relax. I won't know if I am through to the next stage for about 3 weeks, so time to forget about it for a while. If I get through to the second stage I will have to go for an interview and more tests. For those of you thinking that it is supposed to be the most stressful job in the world, I have been looking into it carefully, and had my suspicions confirmed in the chat with the ATCO we spoke to today - it has its stressful moments, but generally isn't as bad as people think, apparently. There are strict rules about working hours and so on as well, to reduce the chance of burnout. Well, we shall see what comes of that.
I have another job interview tomorrow, this time for a job I applied for nearly 2 years ago at the Herts Motor Project! There have been various delays in the creation of this post (mostly due to a lack of funding, but I suspect there was also some involvement of procrastination and committee decision making), but due to a complete re-shuffle in the way they operate they now need someone to take on the role of Teaching Assistant. Included in the post are the additional posts of Schools liaison and some admin. I have a big advantage over any other candidates in that I have been working at the Motor Project every Friday morning for the past 2 years, supporting students from my school. They therefore know that I am more than willing to put on my overalls and get stuck in, am capable of learning stuff I didn't have a clue about before, and they have seen what sort of rapport I have with the kids. All in all a promising prospect, provided there are no more delays in getting funding!
